(7-31-20) On Thursday July 30, 2020 at 8:08 p.m. Officers from the St. Joseph Department of Public Safety were dispatched to Lions Park Beach for the report of a water rescue in Lake Michigan.
Upon arrival four individuals were struggling in the water off Lions Park Beach in Lake Michigan. Fabian Weber was on a surfboard and was able to rescue Meghan Lynch and Vincent Ball by pulling them on the surfboard.
A 44-year-old male from Lakeville, Indiana attempted to save his two children 17 and 12 years of age who were also struggling in the water off Lions Park Beach in Lake Michigan, after they got caught in an undertow. The 17 and 12-year-old were rescued by St. Joseph Reserve Officer Everett Gaston. However, the 44-year-old male drowned while trying to save his children. He was pronounced deceased at Spectrum Health Lakeland.
The victim name is not being released until family and relatives are notified.
