(6-26-19) At around 3am the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of a vehicle (1993 GMC Sierra Pick-up truck) traveling from Indiana into Michigan, eastbound in the westbound lanes of travel on I-94 at a high rate of speed. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle near Lakeside Road and the driver failed to stop. The suspect vehicle crossed the median and continued to travel eastbound in the eastbound lane of travel. The vehicle attempted to cross the median again at which time it was struck by a semi-tractor traveling westbound. It is unknown at this time if this was an intentional act by the suspect driver.
The suspect, Diego Flores-Valero (25) from Chicago, was taken into custody (Operating While Intoxicated, Fleeing & Eluding and Resisting/Obstructing Police) after a short struggle with arresting officers. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this vehicle crash. Suspect was transported to Spectrum – Lakeland Hospital for observation.
I-94 was closed with the assistance of MDOT, New Buffalo Township Fire Department and several other police agencies for several hours while cleanup from this crash took place.
