(6-11-23) Arcangelo (Arrogate-Modeling (Tapit)) this past Saturday won the third leg in the Triple Crown the Belmont Stakes. It is a story that movies are made of…and it has just started.

Bred by Chile’s Don Alberto…Arcangelo turned out to be exactly what he wanted to do when he decided to come to US and expand his race holdings.
Reed Ringler, chief operating officer of Don Alberto’s U.S. operations, told Bloodhorse about Arcangelo
“He was very immature and Arrogate was in a place where people were not sure about him, even though he took our breath away and was one of the best racehorses of the last decade. The world came to see him and judged him and physically, he was just behind.”
Arcangelo was not highly regarded during the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling Sale because he was on the small side and immature. Blue Rose Stable’s Jon Ebbert saw something special in him and his breeding and decided to purchase him as a yearling for just $35,000. To add to the story the ridgling is being trained by Jena Antonucci, who just became the first female trainer in history to win the Belmont.
His sire, Arrogate, had an outstanding career and won over $17 million during his racing career, In 2014 Alberto purchased Modeling, who never made it to the race track, but was purchased as a brood mare for $2.85 million dollars.
Knowing all aspects of the thoroughbred you purchase seems to be the key…Arcangelo again proves that picking a winning horse is more then just paying a high price or owned by the BIG boys in racing. The opportunity is there for those who do their homework.
In past several years we’ve seen Rich Strike win with long-shot odds, Mage owned by a small group and now Arcangelo. New trainers who work with a small-number of horses…who are know their horses on a daily basis and working hard with those horses.
Did you know…
Jockey Javier Castellano was 0 for 15 in the Kentucky Derby before winning this year with Mage. Castellano had never won the Belmont in 14 starts until he did it with Arcangelo on Saturday. Castellano, won the Preakness twice before, in 2006 and 2017…and now has won in every Triple Crown race.
Arcangelo is Italian for Archangel
Arcangelo had to be supplemented to the Belmont for $50,000
Arrogate won the Travers Stakes (G1) setting a Saratoga Race Course track record for 1 1/4 miles, Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), Dubai World Cup (G1), and the Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) with $17,422,600 in earnings.
Modeling‘s second dam is 2007 Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour, who is the dam of 2006 Belmont Stakes winner Jazil ; 2007 Belmont Stakes winner and champion 3-year-old filly Rags to Riches
Jena Antonucci earned her first win as a trainer in March 2010 at Tampa Bay Downs
Jon Ebbert‘s last winning racehorse was a $7,500 claimer at Parx in 2014
