(12-30-22) Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is asking Illinois state legislators for $54 million to help fund emergency services to asylum-seeking individuals and migrants.
Lightfoot made the request in a letter to state legislators from Chicago, obtained by the Chicago Tribune.
She noted that Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s administration sent a letter to the city saying the state is
“out of funds and will no longer be able to support city migrant services refforts as of February 1, 2023.”
“an unusually large numbers of migrants who have been compelled to leave Texas by bus transport .”
Lightfoot wrote. Chicago has 1,531 migrants in its care and is running 11 alternate shelters that provide meals, clothing and showers.
According to President Joe Biden there are more important issues then the border going on-
VP Kamala Harris also states that the border is secure-
Several years ago Lightfoot declared Chicago was a Sanctuary City for migrants.
In February of 2020 Lightfoot said-
“They’re critical because we have said very clearly we’re a welcoming city, we’re a sanctuary city. The Chicago Police Department will not cooperate with ICE on any immigration-related business, and that’s affected their ability to conduct immigration raids across the city, but that’s exactly our intention. We have to make sure that our police department is seen as a legitimate force in all communities, and we cannot do that if we’re participating in raids with a weaponized and politicized ICE. We’re not doing that in Chicago.”
