(8-30-21) Look ‘WHO” saved an Owl…Deputy Jerad Phillips of the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a car vs owl collision.

The incident occurred on M-140 in Watervliet Township. The driver of the vehicle had no damage to her vehicle. However, she was very concerned for the welfare of the owl. Dep. Phillips located the wounded owl near the roadway.

Deputy Phillips went above and beyond the ordinary call of duty to assist this wounded creature. Deputy Phillips contacted DNR Conservation Officer Zach Bauer to see if a wildlife animal rescue or rehabilitation center would take the owl.

The two began making phone calls to see if anyone could provide aid and care for the owl. Deputy Phillips was able to make arrangements with a licensed wild animal rehabilitation center specializing in hawks and owls located in the Kalamazoo area. Deputy Phillips cared for the owl until it was turned over to a wildlife rescue specialist on the morning of 8/28/21.
