(5-16-21) The Elkhart Police Department would like to recognize Cpl. Jonathon Carver. On April 27, 2021 at approximately 11:05 am Police responded to the 1300 block of Wildflower Street , including Cpl. Carver, to a shooting with injuries. A 5-year-old boy had been accidentally shot by a 6-year-old boy. Cpl. Carver was the second officer to arrive on scene. Upon entering the home, Cpl. Carver immediately started administering life saving techniques on the 5- year-old victim.

The scene was very chaotic. Cpl. Carver was able to ignore the chaos of the situation, assess the boy`s wounds and focus on saving his life. The boy was semi-conscious and in a great deal of pain. Cpl. Carver immediately applied a compression bandage to the boy. Cpl. Carver talked to the boy, comforted him, and kept him awake until Elkhart Fire Department Paramedics arrived on scene and took over his care.

As the paramedics were loading the boy for transport, Cpl. Carver continued to provide information about the boy`s wounds, type and caliber of the firearm. This is vital information for future treatment. Elkhart Fire Department medics transported the boy directly to Memorial Hospital in South Bend. From Memorial Hospital the boy was flown to Riley Children`s Hospital in Indianapolis.

The Doctors credited the actions by Cpl. Carver in saving the boy’s life. Good Job Cpl. Carver, Officers on scene, Medics, and the Dispatchers involved. Cpl. Carver has been nominated for the Department’s Life Saving Award.
