(10-19-20) South Bend, IN-Two South Bend, IN teens face gun and drug charges after leading an Indiana State Trooper on a short chase before crashing their vehicle into a concrete foundation.
Around noon yesterday, October 18, 2020, Trooper Kyle Hudson attempted to make a traffic stop on a silver 2005 Chevrolet for a moving violation on Prairie Avenue near Swygart Avenue in South Bend, IN.
When Hudson turned on his red and blue emergency lights the Chevrolet allegedly fled down an alley before heading back onto city streets. The chase ended quickly when the Chevrolet crashed into a concrete foundation near Walnut and Calvert.
Following the crash, the male passenger in the Chevrolet fled on foot but was soon caught by responding officers. The driver, identified as Michael Winston (18) of South Bend, IN was safely taken into custody at the scene.
Several plastic bags containing suspected marijuana were found in the Chevrolet as well as numerous pills that presumptively tested positive for Methamphetamine. Also located was a handgun equipped with a laser site. The handgun was loaded with a full magazine and a round in the chamber.
After being medically cleared at a local hospital, Winston was transported to the St. Joseph County Jail on preliminary charges of Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle, Possession of Marijuana, Dealing Marijuana, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Dealing Methamphetamine.
The passenger that fled on foot was found to be a juvenile and was released to his legal guardian. A report will be forwarded to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office to determine any charges.
The Indiana State Police were assisted by the South Bend Police Department.
