Why a gelding?

By Adamm Ingals

There are many advantages to gelding a thoroughbred horse. Some of the most common advantages include:

  • Improved temperament: Geldings are generally known for being calmer and easier to handle than stallions. This is because gelding reduces the production of testosterone, which can cause stallions to be more aggressive and unpredictable.
  • Increased focus: Geldings are often more focused on training and racing than stallions. This is because they are not distracted by the urge to breed.
  • Better racing performance: Some studies have shown that geldings may have a slight advantage over stallions in racing. This is likely due to their calmer temperament and improved focus.
  • Reduced risk of injury: Geldings are less likely to injure themselves due to fighting or breeding. This can lead to a longer and healthier racing career.
  • Increased value: Geldings are generally more valuable than stallions, especially if they have proven themselves to be successful racehorses. Because they are easier to handle and train.

Overall, gelding is a safe and effective procedure that can offer many advantages for thoroughbred horses. If you are considering owning a thoroughbred horse, it is important to weigh the pros and cons of gelding before making a decision.

Here are some additional things to consider when deciding whether or not to geld a thoroughbred horse:

  • The horse’s temperament: If the horse is already calm and easy to handle, gelding may not be necessary.
  • The horse’s potential for racing: If the horse has the potential to be a successful racehorse, gelding may be a good idea to improve its temperament and focus.
  • The horse’s future use: If the horse will be used for breeding, gelding is not an option.
  • The horse’s owner’s preferences: Some people prefer to own geldings, while others prefer to own stallions.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to geld a thoroughbred horse is a personal one. There is no right or wrong answer, and the best decision will vary depending on the individual horse and its owner.
