(11-13-20) On 11/13/20 at approximately 10:39am Deputy Angela Baggett of the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the City of Buchanan for a violation of the State of Michigan Motor Vehicle Code, however the operator of the vehicle failed to “pull over”for the deputy.

A pursuit took place from the City of Buchanan, thru the Niles Township and into the City of Niles. This pursuit did not involve excessive speeds. Once in the City of Niles, the suspect vehicle crashed into a dirt embankment and the two occupants fled on foot.

The two individuals were apprehended and taken into custody. One of the individuals was apprehended shortly after fleeing the vehicle on foot, while the second individual was located and apprehended after a three hour search.

During the course of this investigation, the officers learned that the suspect vehicle was reported stolen out of Champaign Illinois and learned that the two individuals were possibly involved in a homicide in Chicago, Illinois.

Both of the teens, age 18 and 19, are lodged at the Berrien County Jail.

The investigation is currently on-going and once the individuals are formally arraigned their names and respective charges will be released.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office is currently assisting the Chicago Illinois Police Department in the homicide portion of the investigation.
