(2-16-18) – (LaGrange County, IN)-A 33 year old man from Elkhart County was arrested late last night following a vehicle pursuit which started on the Indiana Toll Road in LaGrange County and ended in Bristol.
According to Trooper Zarek Finley, at approximately 9:28 p.m., he attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a 1993 Chevrolet Camaro traveling westbound on the Toll Road at the 118 mile marker, which is about three miles west of the Howe exit, for multiple traffic infractions.
Despite Trooper Zarek having his emergency lights and siren activated, the driver of the Camaro, 33 year old Christopher Wayne Stoops refused to stop. Stoops continued westbound and was able to avoid stop sticks which were deployed near the 107 mile marker before exiting at the Middlebury exit and driving through a closed toll plaza gate.
Stoops ultimately ran over multiple stop sticks which were deployed by the Goshen Police Department but continued to drive on damaged tires until he reached the Timberbrook mobile home community in Bristol where he came to a controlled stop in a cul-de-sac at approximately 10:09 p.m. He was reportedly physically combative with officers but was quickly subdued and taken into custody.
Stoops was transported to and incarcerated in the LaGrange County Jail on the following preliminary charges:
- Resisting Law Enforcement With a Vehicle
- Resisting Law Enforcement
- Reckless Driving
- Operating While Intoxicated- Controlled Substance
- Operating While Intoxicated- Endangerment
- Operator Never Licensed
- Possession of Paraphernalia
- Body Attachment out of Goshen (Elkhart County) for Theft
