Definition of Appendix Quarter Horse—The Appendix Quarter Horse is a first-generation cross between a thoroughbred and an American Quarter Horse. It gained popularity as breeders recognized that the cross retained the energy and temperament of the thoroughbred and the incredible speed and agility of the American Quarter Horse.
(9-25-23) This past weekend the Heritage Place 45th Annual Quarter Horse Yearling Sale was held.
It was a successful sale…according to Heritage Place…
Over the three-day sale 53 yearlings broke six-figures, 16 broke the $200,000 mark, 10 $300,000 and the high-seller commanded $450,000.
But for Appendix yearlings sale prices were disappointing…this year there were ‘Into Mischief‘ yearlings auctioned off with the top seller going for just $34,000. All of the yearlings came from artificial insemination and a lower stud fee then his thoroughbred fee of $250,000. In 2022 he broke (again) the all-time record in North America for progeny earnings in a single season.
His stablemate at Spendthrift Farms, Mitole, had two yearlings in sale with a disappointing sale price of $7,500 and $6,000.
The two stallions come from one of the top breeders in the world—Spendthrift Farms. So why did all of these yearlings get overlooked by buyers? The incorporation of thoroughbred cross-breeding with quarter horses has produced positive results over the year.

The top selling Appendix yearling went to Favorite Trick, who was one of the top thoroughbred racers in his day and 1997 Horse of the Year, who produced the top seller at $67,000 and the 2nd highest at $40,000. Thanks to Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) he was able to continue produce foals…he died in a barn fire on June 6th, 2006.
