(7-23-23) Howgreatisnate is one of those runners that kind of sneaks up on you. He is another example of what many overlooked and then he turns out to be that hidden gem.

Howgreatisnate, after missing nominations deadlines for the Triple Crown races, would wait until yesterday when he would run with the big boys in the Haskell Stakes and finished 6th.

Female trainers, are having a good couple of weeks, Arcangelo trainer Jena Antonucci led him to a Belmont win and now Elizabeth Dobles is doing a great job with the Speightster gelding.

Elizabeth Dobles

Dobles took over training Howgreatisnate sometime in March when Imaginary Stables owner John Guarnere sought to make a change, moving the colt from Andrew Simoff’s barn after a disappointing fourth-place finish in the Private Terms Stakes at Laurel Park. Two starts before that Howgreatisnate stumbled at the start and lost his rider in the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct, after winning all four races as a two-year-old.

Howgreatisnate picked up the $100,000 Long Branch Stakes win on opening day at Monmouth Park for Dobles, her first as his trainer.

Howgreatisnate TB, B, G, foaled February 10, 2020 ( Speightster – Bee Dees Bid, by Tapit ) was purchased by Imaginary Stables’ John Guarnere for $67,000 at the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He has now won over $250,000 since starting his racing career as a 2-year old.

He was sired by Speightster and out of the mare Bee Dees Bid. He was bred in Kentucky by B. D. Gibbs Farm, LLC. Howgreatisnate‘s sire, Speightster, was a successful racehorse who won the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Sprint. His dam, Bee Dees Bid, was a stakes-placed runner who finished second in the 2012 Kentucky Oaks.

Howgreatisnate has raced at Aqueduct, Delaware Park, Laurel Park, Monmouth Park, and Parx Racing. He has won three stakes races, including the 2023 Long Branch, 2022 Future Stars, and 2022 First State Dash.

The rest of the year don’t be surprised if along the way Howgreatisnate picks up a big win.
