(6-2-23) If you want to get rich owning fractional shares of a thoroughbred…don’t start. If you want to be a small part of an opportunity to own a share or two of a racing thorougbred to experience the ups and downs of the business side, even the opportunity to be in the winner’s circle. then fractional ownership is for you.
Reality…let’s take a look at just one past fractional share opportunity.
Mo Mischief (5 year old, bay gelding) bred at Machmer Hall Farm.
Mo Mischief is out of one the world’s top sires Into Mischief (Montessa G Dam Sire: Montbrook), he was purchased for $235,000 as a yearling and then for $500,000 as a 2-year old.
Shares were sold for $75, he started out with Todd Pletcher as his trainer. Automatic success…not so fast.
His racing career would end in September of 2022 after 15 races and was claimed after a win and was retired from racing after winning 3 races.

For a fractional shareholder ownership ends when the horse is claimed, sold at auction or is retired. Horses who race and win in graded races have the chance to payback the share money invested in that horse and possibly when sold at a high price. Other possibilities could pay back your investment…. depending on the terms of terms offered on the shares.
At least there is a very happy ending for Mo Mischief…after his racing career ended. He is now located in Virginia after being rehomed and has already started his successful second career, including show jumping.

So if you think fractional ownership will help with your retirement fund…find something else to do. But the reward for some is way more then just the money.
